A Club's Guide to Finding Talent Beyond Your Backyard

Most recruitment still runs on the same network every club already has: local contacts, familiar agents, players who show up at the same trials as everyone else. That network is useful, but it's also the same pool every other club nearby is drawing from, which means the player who'd be a perfect fit but happens to be training somewhere you've never looked never enters the conversation.

Widening that search doesn't have to mean a bigger scouting budget or a trip abroad. It means searching differently.

A more useful way to search

1. Start from the role, not the region. Instead of "who do we know in country X," filter by exactly what the squad needs, position, age range, dominant foot, level, and let the results tell you where the players actually are.
2. Watch before you reach out. A short video tells you more in 30 seconds than a stats sheet does in a page. Prioritize profiles with footage over ones without, regardless of where they're based.
3. Contact directly, skip the layers. Every extra intermediary between you and the player slows the process and adds cost. A direct message gets you a direct answer.
4. Don't confuse verified with unavailable. A verified professional profile (coach, agent, physio) attached to a player is a signal of legitimacy, not a barrier, it usually means someone competent is already involved in that player's development.

Why it's worth the extra step

The players hardest to find are often the ones with the least competition for their signature, not because they're less talented, but because fewer clubs are even looking in their direction yet. Widening your search isn't just about finding more options. It's about finding the ones nobody else has found first.
